Vallarta to Finish Malecón Revitalization by December

  • November 13, 2025

Mayor Luis Munguía has shared excellent news regarding the renovation of Malecón 2 and the expansion of Puerto Vallarta’s famous boardwalk. The extensive work is not only progressing smoothly, but is actually running approximately four days ahead of the original plan, bringing a significant upgrade to the city’s heart closer to completion.

The renovation, which began in mid-August, addresses the neglected southern stretch of the main tourist promenade. This section runs from the pedestrian bridge at the Cuale River’s mouth to the Dolphin Fountain and will be officially renamed Feria Malecón. Funded by resources from the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (ZOFEMAT), the overhaul is comprehensive.

The plan includes a full aesthetic and structural refresh: repainting, repairing damaged slabs, and significantly upgrading the electrical infrastructure with new lighting and rewiring. Crews are also focused on renewing the plant irrigation system and installing new, attractive street furniture, such as trash cans and additional benches, while refurbishing existing pieces.

Crucially, the project will also reconfigure the retaining wall that sustained damage during Hurricane Priscilla, ensuring the boardwalk is stronger and more resilient for the future. The decorative borders, planters, and the cladding of retaining walls, steps, and ramps are all being renovated to harmonize the look and feel of the entire extended boardwalk.

In addition to the Malecón 2 renovation, a key expansion project is underway. Since October 13, work has progressed to extend the Malecón’s reach toward Hidalgo Park, specifically along Argentina Street. The Mayor confirmed that traffic flow on Argentina Street will remain the same up to October 31st, prioritizing active mobility and accessibility.

This expansion focuses on leveling sidewalks for easier access, adding new seating and planters, and preserving the existing bike path. The surface will be elevated to improve the collection of rainwater runoff through new storm drains. The materials used throughout both projects are being standardized to create a unified and beautiful public space, featuring porphyry stone, washed concrete, and artistic Wixárika-inspired designs rendered in black gravel.

The investment for the expansion is being made with municipal funds, and Mayor Munguía, an architect himself, is committed to finishing the entire project by December 15th. While the roadway will remain open to controlled traffic, the benefits of this renovation extend far beyond a fresh look.

One of the most significant improvements is the renovation of the drainage and drinking water lines, ensuring the city’s essential services are modernized and reliable for years to come. The installation of new streetlights, sidewalks, and street furniture will contribute to a clean, functional, and welcoming environment for both residents and visitors.

This extensive effort is transforming Puerto Vallarta’s most cherished public space, promising a refreshed and accessible promenade that enhances the city’s appeal for all. https://banderasnews.com/
