The Vallarta Abuelos are once again stepping up to make a difference in the lives of local children through their annual School Bag Project. This group of dedicated Mexican and expat volunteers is working hard to ensure that 700 children from low-income families start the new school year with everything they need to succeed.
In Mexico, public school is not truly free. Families must cover costs for enrollment, two to three uniforms, two pairs of shoes, school supplies, transportation, and daily lunches. For many, especially single mothers and grandparents raising children, these costs are overwhelming. As a result, 63% of students eventually drop out.
The Vallarta Abuelos aim to change that—one backpack at a time. Each August, they provide school bags packed with essential supplies to children who dream of continuing their education. For just $35 USD, donors can sponsor a backpack filled with notebooks, pens, pencils, and more, giving a child the confidence and tools to start school ready to learn.
Older students face additional challenges. Junior and senior high schoolers need funds for textbooks, bus fare, and lunch expenses that quickly add up. A daily school lunch can cost 100 pesos (about $5 USD), a price that’s out of reach for many struggling families. A small gift can go a long way in keeping students in school and focused on their futures.
The School Bag Project is organized under DFW International, a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so American donors can receive tax-deductible receipts. Most importantly, every dollar goes directly to helping children – there are no paid staff or administrative fees.
