Puerto Vallarta is set to welcome young soccer players from across western Mexico this summer with the launch of the inaugural Summer Cup Puerto Vallarta, a new tournament designed to combine athletic competition with the region’s growing sports tourism sector.
The event, scheduled for July 21-26, was officially introduced during a press conference held at La Isla Shopping Village. Tournament director Héctor Matus Soto outlined plans for what organizers hope will become a cornerstone event on Puerto Vallarta’s annual sports calendar.
Matus explained that the tournament was created to fill a gap in the summer season, when many youth teams traditionally travel to other cities in search of competition. Recognizing Puerto Vallarta’s reputation as a sports destination, organizers saw an opportunity to bring a major summer soccer event to the city.
The Summer Cup will feature multiple divisions and formats, welcoming boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 18. By offering a wide range of categories, the tournament aims to attract clubs and associations from throughout the region while providing valuable playing opportunities for young athletes.
Competition will begin with a round-robin group stage, with a goal of having at least eight teams in each division. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Gold Cup playoffs, while third- and fourth-place finishers will compete in the Silver Cup bracket. Both playoff competitions will follow a single-elimination format, culminating in championship matches.
This structure guarantees that every team will play a minimum of four games during the week-long tournament.
Interest in the event has already exceeded expectations. More than 50 teams have registered, and organizers anticipate significant growth in participation over the coming weeks. Teams from Nayarit, Michoacán, other regions of Jalisco, and Puerto Vallarta are already confirmed.
Beyond the competition itself, organizers believe the Summer Cup will generate meaningful economic benefits for the destination. Because the tournament takes place during the summer vacation period, many players are expected to travel with family members and supporters, extending their stays and contributing to local businesses while enjoying the area’s beaches, attractions, and hospitality.
Matus emphasized that sports tourism continues to be one of Puerto Vallarta’s strengths and said the Summer Cup is intended to contribute to the city’s development through youth sports, community involvement, and visitor spending.
William Arredondo Camacho, director of the Municipal Sports Council (COMUDE), expressed confidence in the tournament’s future, highlighting Matus’ longstanding dedication to youth soccer development in the region. He noted that the Summer Cup has the potential to attract more than 100 teams in future editions.
Arredondo also announced that COMUDE will work to bring scouts from professional organizations, including clubs such as the Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente, to observe the tournament. The initiative aims to provide talented local players with opportunities to showcase their skills and potentially advance to higher levels of competition.
With strong early registration numbers, broad regional interest, and a focus on youth development, the Summer Cup Puerto Vallarta is poised to become an exciting addition to the city’s growing portfolio of sporting events. https://banderasnews.com/
