Construction of the new Terminal 2 at Puerto Vallarta International Airport is progressing steadily, with Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP) confirming the project has reached 54% completion, and is now set to open in the second half of 2027.
GAP is investing 9.2 billion pesos (US$492 million) in the project, a clear sign of confidence in Puerto Vallarta’s continued growth as one of Mexico’s leading travel destinations. Once complete, the terminal will expand the airport’s capacity to six million passengers per year, doubling its current operations.
The facility will cover 119,114 square meters and feature 8 new contact positions and 4 remote ones. Combined with the existing terminal, the airport will have 19 contact positions and 13 remote stands, allowing for greater flexibility in handling both domestic and international flights.
Between January and July 2025, Puerto Vallarta International Airport welcomed 4.3 million passengers, with service from 18 airlines operating 52 seasonal routes – 14 within Mexico, 22 to the United States, and 16 to Canada. Growth continues as new airlines prepare to join: Porter Airlines from Canada will launch service in November with flights from Toronto, Ottawa, and Hamilton, while Southwest Airlines will add a San Diego–Puerto Vallarta connection in early 2026.
Sustainability is at the heart of Terminal 2’s design. GAP is building the terminal to meet LEED Gold certification, incorporating rainwater harvesting, solar panels, and high-efficiency glass facades that reduce heat transfer. These features reflect the company’s commitment to minimizing environmental impact and optimizing resource use.
“The new terminal will allow us to double the number of passengers served and give a strong boost to the region’s economic development,” said terminal director Omar Torres. He highlighted the airport’s strategic location near major destinations such as Nuevo Nayarit and Punta Mita as an important factor for growth.
According to GAP, the innovative and environmentally conscious design makes Terminal 2 a benchmark for green airport infrastructure in Mexico. Once completed, it will not only improve passenger experience but also mark a new era of sustainable air connectivity for Puerto Vallarta and the surrounding region. https://banderasnews.com/
