Puerto Vallarta United in Flood Recovery: A Community Effort

  • September 28, 2025

Following Friday’s heavy rains, the city of Puerto Vallarta is rallying together to help families affected by widespread flooding. The Municipal Government has launched a comprehensive relief effort, with multiple agencies and dedicated volunteers working tirelessly to restore normalcy and assist those in need.

A Coordinated Response

Immediately after the floods, the Puerto Vallarta Civil Protection and Fire Department teamed up with the Mexican Army and other municipal agencies to implement an emergency plan. Their combined efforts have focused on some of the hardest-hit areas, including the Las Mojoneras district. Personnel assisted residents with cleaning homes and schools, recovering furniture, and salvaging personal belongings. Teams also conducted a census to assess the full extent of the damage, ensuring that support reaches every family that needs it.

The storm caused significant damage, with the fire department reporting that dozens of homes were inundated, and residents’ furniture and personal items were ruined. The most severe impacts were felt in neighborhoods near canals and streams, where the overflowing waterways overwhelmed the streets’ drainage systems.

Leaders Pledge Support

Governor Pablo Lemus and Mayor Luis Munguía have been working together to coordinate the relief efforts. During a tour of the Las Mojoneras district, Governor Lemus met with affected families, listening to their concerns and promising help.

He specifically pledged to repair the damaged Octavio Paz School. Mayor Munguía praised the governor’s collaboration, stating, “We are working together to provide support to the affected families and rebuild the damaged infrastructure.”

The governor noted the unusual intensity of the rainfall, which residents confirmed was the heaviest in many years. He reassured citizens that he and Mayor Munguía would continue to work together, stating, “We will not leave the people of Vallarta alone.”

Community Aid and Generosity

The Puerto Vallarta DIF System, under the direction of Mayor Munguía, also activated assistance brigades. These teams have been making humanitarian visits to affected neighborhoods, delivering essential supplies like cleaning kits, personal hygiene products, and food. A generous donation from the Cimarrón Foundation also provided blankets to those who lost belongings.

A community kitchen has been established to provide meals for more than 150 people, with the assistance of local volunteers. Zaira Castillón, director of DIF Vallarta, confirmed that their support would extend to additional neighborhoods, stating, “Our president, Claudia Peña, has instructed that support reach everyone.” The organization plans to maintain its active brigade in the days ahead.

Mayor Munguía expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA), the Rehabilita Network, civil associations, and youth groups for their crucial support. He acknowledged that the quick and dedicated response of these groups has been essential in helping Puerto Vallarta recover as efficiently as possible. This united front shows the incredible resilience and spirit of the people of Puerto Vallarta. https://banderasnews.com/
