The Eighth Naval Zone of Puerto Vallarta and the Administration of the National Port System (ASIPONA), in coordination with an organizing committee made up of businessmen, tour operators, and agencies of the three levels of government, are working on preparations for the celebration of “National Navy Day,” a celebration that will take place in Puerto Vallarta on June 1st.
The events and activities that will take place within the framework of the maritime celebration will begin a week before the main celebration and will be divided into sports, recreational, cultural, and social activities, which will end with the parade of boats and an event on the Malecón in coordination with the municipal authority, in which citizens will have the opportunity to be part of the celebration from Los Arcos del Malecón.
Retired Vice Admiral Víctor Uribe Arévalo, also General Director of ASIPONA in Puerto Vallarta, highlighted the importance of this event, which celebrates not only the Navy but also all the men and women who have dedicated their lives to maritime activities, inviting all marine people and organizations to celebrate this important date together.
“As Mexicans, we recognize the women and men of the Navy, along with all the people who carry out any activity at sea, such as merchant mariners, fishermen, and tourism service providers, who through their work, dedication and commitment, protect our seas and drive our economy and our nation across the seas,” he said.
“That is why it is an honor for us to extend this invitation to all citizens of Puerto Vallarta so that together we can celebrate this commemoration as a family,” he added.
“And very soon we will be sharing more information and details of the event,” said Melissa Madero, public relations officer in charge.
A Little History…
Navy Day was established by the fact that on June 1, 1917, the steamer “Tabasco,” a Mexican merchant ship, sailed from the port of Veracruz for the first time with the entire crew made up of Mexicans by birth and under the command of Captain Rafael Izaguirre; the first crossing was to Progreso, Yucatan. This happened in compliance with article 32 of the Constitution promulgated on February 5 of that same year. Before, the captains, chief engineers, and officers of the Mexican ships were all foreigners.
The first occasion on which Navy Day was celebrated was on June 1, 1942, which served to honor the crews of the Mexican tankers “Potrero del Llano” and “Faja de Oro”, which were sunk by German submarines on May 13 and 20 of that year, during World War II. https://banderasnews.com/
