To address this growing concern, the Puerto Vallarta City Council is exploring the possibility of introducing virtual parking meters and smart parking systems. City officials stress that the project is still in its early stages and that community input will guide any future action.
In a recent informational meeting, Mayor Luis Munguía’s administration invited residents from the Historic Center and Romantic Zone to share their views on the proposal. The event marked the beginning of a series of dialogues aimed at building consensus and gathering feedback before any decisions are made.
Juan Pablo Martínez, manager of the City and Historic Center, emphasized the administration’s commitment to community consultation. “We want to listen,” he said. “Unlike past governments, we are making decisions with citizens, not for them.” A technical committee is already reviewing the feasibility of the plan, examining issues such as traffic congestion, abandoned vehicles, and the shortage of open spaces.
Councilman Arnulfo Ortega Contreras assured residents that if the plan goes forward, locals would not be required to pay for parking in their neighborhoods. He also clarified that the system would be installed and operated by a private company, with no public funds used. The city would receive a share of the revenue to reinvest in neighborhood improvements.
“This is not about imposition,” Contreras added. “It’s about responding to what residents have asked for and working together to improve the city.”
City officials plan to hold similar meetings in other areas under consideration, including Versalles and Marina Vallarta.
