One of Puerto Vallarta’s most deeply moving traditions returns this Holy Week. Guerreros de Dios Catholic group presents their annual live reenactment of the Passion of Jesus on Good Friday, April 18, 2025.
The Passion, derived from the Latin word patior, meaning “to suffer, bear, endure,” encapsulates the crucial final period in the life of Jesus before his death, as recounted in the canonical gospels.
The highlight for many is the Via Crucis, where the person portraying Jesus carries a heavy wooden cross through the streets, followed by an entourage of costumed participants. This live procession through Puerto Vallarta is a visual and emotional spectacle, a moment of reflection and connection, even for those outside the Christian faith.
This community production begins at 10:00 a.m. in Parque Lázaro Cárdenas, First Station of the Cross, continuing along El Malecón, at Parque Hidalgo, where the powerful takes place. It is a solemn, unforgettable experience that draws hundreds of spectators.
Since 2007, Guerreros de Dios has dedicated itself to presenting this important religious event, which portrays the final hours of Jesus Christ’s life, including his suffering, crucifixion, and death. What makes this reenactment particularly remarkable is the commitment of its participants, who spend months preparing for their roles in this emotionally charged performance.
For the first time, the organizers are asking for support. With over 100 people involved in the production, donations are needed in advance to provide participants with water, electrolytes, tortas de frijoles, and refreshing Agua de Jamaica during the long performance under the sun. Though attendance remains free, the community’s generosity is essential to help sustain this inspiring tradition.
Cash donations can be delivered to Delia Flores at Bicho Marisquería, a seafood taco stand located at the corner of Colombia and Argentina streets in Colonia 5 de Diciembre, behind Iglesia del Refugio (Our Lady of the Refuge Church). Delia Alejandra Flores Beltrán can be reached via WhatsApp at +52 322-229-3380 for more details.
Through its artistry, reverence, and sense of devotion, the Passion Play continues to be a treasured expression of faith and community in Puerto Vallarta’s celebration of Semana Santa. https://banderasnews.com/
