Puerto Vallarta is gearing up for a transportation transformation to provide residents and tourists with a safer, more efficient, and eco-friendly public transit experience. Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro and Mayor Luis Ernesto Munguía recently unveiled a cutting-edge transportation model that will redefine mobility in the city by year’s end.
Part of the Puerto Vallarta Integrated Transportation System, the plan introduces 38 new electric buses, including 18 articulated units with a 120-passenger capacity and 20 standard buses for 70 passengers. These modern vehicles will run on four primary routes and one complementary route, ensuring a bus arrives every five minutes.
Each bus will feature air conditioning, video surveillance, and route monitoring, offering a comfortable and secure experience for the estimated 20,000 daily passengers. Payment options include the Mi Movilidad card, QR codes, and credit or debit cards, streamlining access.
The new system focuses on sustainability, with buses reducing emissions and improving air quality along Francisco Medina Ascencio Avenue and other key routes. Connections will link Ixtapa to downtown Puerto Vallarta, passing through strategic points like Las Juntas, the Centro Universitario de la Costa (CUCosta), the airport, and Marina Vallarta.
Infrastructure improvements include three transfer stations, a central hub at the airport, and ten high-accessibility stops among 110 total stops citywide. The upgrades reflect the city’s growing needs, supporting its 300,000 residents and millions of annual visitors.
Puerto Vallarta’s fleet of 330 buses, which already includes 230 natural gas vehicles, will integrate with the new units, maintaining service on 31 routes. By late October, the arrival of the first electric buses and the construction of bus stops will mark the first step toward implementing this ambitious plan, representing an investment of over 800 million pesos.
