Puerto Vallarta is lighting up with energy as it hosts its second annual Carnaval, a three-day festival from February 20th to 22nd. With over 50,000 attendees expected, the event offers an unforgettable mix of music, culture, and celebration, uniting locals and visitors in a grand display of joy and community spirit.
At a recent press conference, Guadalupe Basulto, director of the Vallarta Institute of Culture (IVC), emphasized the event’s focus on fostering a family-friendly and festive atmosphere, a key priority for the administration of Mayor Luis Munguía. Alejandra Cornejo, director of Economic Promotion and Tourism, highlighted the economic boost the festival brings, benefiting local businesses, restaurants, bars, and clubs.
The festivities kick off on February 20 with the Carnaval Queen pageant at Los Arcos del Malecón. The excitement continues at Los Arcos on February 21 with the Gay Carnaval Queen pageant at 6 pm.
The highlight of the weekend, the grand Carnaval parade, will take place on Saturday, February 22. Starting at 5 pm from the Sheraton, the parade will showcase 30 stunning floats along the Malecón to the Romantic Zone. Along the route, stands will offer food and refreshments, with a portion of proceeds supporting Animal Welfare.
Adding to the festivities, seven stages set up across the downtown area will host live performances from over 40 artists, ensuring a dynamic celebration from 5:00 pm to midnight. The main stage at the Malecón’s Lighthouse will feature family-friendly entertainment from 7 to 10 pm, followed by performances for adults from 10:30 pm to 3 am, keeping the party going well into the night.
Carnival holds a special place in Puerto Vallarta’s history, with its roots back to 1956. It was revived in 1992 as a tourism initiative and later evolved in 2008 into the “Mardi Gras Parade, Carnival of Puerto Vallarta,” originally catering to the LGBT community.
