Puerto Vallarta Advances Amado Nervo Road Connection

  • August 29, 2026

A major transportation project linking Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas is nearing the finish line. Construction of the Amado Nervo Bridge, also known as the Ameca River Bridge, is now 90 percent complete and is expected to open in November 2026.

The project is designed to address one of the region’s most persistent transportation challenges: heavy traffic along Federal Highway 200 and the existing crossings between Jalisco and Nayarit. Nayarit Governor Miguel Ángel Navarro Quintero confirmed that the bridge represents an investment of 900 million pesos.

Once completed, the 800-meter-long bridge will provide four lanes of toll-free traffic. It will measure 24 meters wide and is expected to benefit more than 500,000 people who live, work, study, or travel between the two municipalities.

The new crossing is also expected to make a noticeable difference in daily travel. By replacing some of the bottlenecks created by the current two-lane intersections, officials estimate that commuters could save nearly 30 minutes each day.

However, the bridge is just one part of a larger transportation project. Complementary construction on the Puerto Vallarta side is scheduled to continue through June 2027, according to Mayor Luis Munguía, who recently inspected progress along the new Avenida Federación.

As part of the project, Avenida Federación will be renamed Amado Nervo, matching the name of the roadway on the Nayarit side. The route is being developed with a concrete surface, three lanes in each direction, bicycle paths, trees and landscaping.

Munguía said the section extending beyond the University Center of the Coast is expected to be completed before February 2027. The city has already allocated funding for this portion through the Municipal Social Infrastructure Fund, known as FAISMUN.

The next phase will include another vehicular bridge and an additional 1.3 kilometers of roadway. Municipal officials are also negotiating with federal authorities to finish the connection from Avenida México to the intersection at Mojoneras by the middle of 2027.

The completed corridor is expected to give commuters an alternative to some of the busiest sections of Federal Highway 200. It will be especially useful for people who cross the state line every day, including employees, students, business owners and visitors.

For students at the University of Guadalajara who live in Bahía de Banderas, the improved connection could mean a simpler trip to campus. It will also benefit residents of Jalisco who travel to Nayarit for work or school.

With the main bridge approaching completion and additional road improvements planned through 2027, the Amado Nervo project is set to become an important part of the region’s growing transportation network.  https://banderasnews.com/
