Magical Towns in Mexico
Last week on October 11-14, in Morelia, Michoacan, Tourism Secretary Enrique de la Madrid designated ten new towns in Mexico as “Magical” at the fifth annual Pueblos Magicos Fair bringing the total to 121. Throughout Mexico, these magical towns offer travelers more than just a beach resort.
The Mexico Tourism Board in 2001 launched Pueblos Magicos offering visitors a “Magical” experience to promote charming remarkable towns by reason of their natural beauty, cultural richness, traditions, folklore, historical relevance, cuisine, art and crafts, and outstanding hospitality.
A total of three billion Pesos (the U.S. $158.9 million) has been invested to improve the infrastructure in the designated towns said the Tourism Secretary. Designed to showcase tourist destinations other than beach resorts, was the purpose of The Pueblos Magicos program.
The new Pueblos Mágicos can be found in central and northern Mexico and include: Muzquiz, Coahuila; Nombre de Dios, Durango; Comonfort, Guanajuato; Zimapán, Hidalgo; Tlaquepaque, Jalisco; Compostela, Nayarit; Bustamante, Nuevo León; Amealco de Bonfil, Querétaro; Aquismon, San Luis Potosí; and Guadalupe, Zacatecas.
Tourists who visit each town will experience historical, cultural and aesthetic qualities.
For instance, Tlaquepaque, Jalisco is decorated and known for with colorful hanging umbrellas, Mariachi performances at El Parian, an area of restaurants around a bandstand, Instagram-worthy Calle Independence. Nombre de Dios Durango is a natural wonder full of waterfalls and tree-lined streams.
