Madonnari Festival Returns to Puerto Vallarta in February 13-15, 2026

  • January 30, 2026

Puerto Vallarta is preparing for the return of the Madonnari Festival, scheduled for February 13–15, 2026. Announced by the Puerto Vallarta–Santa Barbara Sister Cities Committee, the eighteenth edition will once again transform the Plaza de Armas into an open-air gallery celebrating creativity, community, and tradition.

The Madonnari Festival centers on a centuries-old art form that began in 16th-century Italy, where street artists recreated religious images – often of the Madonna – directly on pavement using chalk and pastels. Over time, the practice spread across Europe, reaching London by 1906 and arriving in Puerto Vallarta in 1987. Today, Madonnari festivals are held around the world, blending historical techniques with modern artistic expression.

During the three-day event, the cement walkways of Plaza de Armas will become temporary canvases. Artists of all ages will create detailed chalk works that play with illusion, perspective, and global art influences, turning everyday public space into a shared cultural experience.

The Puerto Vallarta–Santa Barbara Sister Cities Committee encourages students, professional artists, and creative residents of all ages to participate in this community-oriented celebration. To ensure the festival remains accessible to everyone, all necessary materials are provided to participants free of charge. This inclusive environment fosters a unique mentorship where young students can work alongside seasoned masters, sharing techniques and celebrating the joy of urban expression.

Beyond the opportunity to showcase their talent, participants are eligible for various forms of recognition and certificates across multiple categories. The stakes are particularly high for those in the Adult category; the grand prize winner will receive a sponsored trip to represent Puerto Vallarta at the Madonnari Festival in Santa Barbara, California, with all expenses covered, or a cash alternative.

Prospective artists have until February 9, 2026, to secure their spot in this prestigious event. Complete guidelines and sign-up information are available at linktr.ee/FESTIVALMADONNARI2026.

The XVIII Madonnari Festival offers a chance to experience art in the open air, share creative talent, and leave a lasting impression – if only for a few days – at one of the city’s most beloved cultural gatherings. https://banderasnews.com/
