Jalisco Civil Protection Prepared for Active Hurricane Season
The Jalisco State Civil Protection and Firefighters Unit (UEPCJ) is ready to assist residents during the 2024 Pacific hurricane season, which began May 15th. Forecasters predict 15-18 cyclones, including 8-9 tropical storms, 4-5 Category 1 or 2 hurricanes, and 3-4 major hurricanes (Category 3-5).
The National Water Commission and the National Hurricane Center estimate 5 systems could impact Mexico. Jalisco Civil Protection maintains communication with all levels of government for a swift response.
A critical tool is the Warning System for Tropical Cyclones and Tsunamis, with 27 speakers along the Jalisco coast for timely public warnings. The UEPCJ has Regional Commands in Puerto Vallarta and Melaque, with over 285 deployable officers.
Authorities urge residents to stay informed through official channels and call 911 in emergencies.
While Puerto Vallarta’s location offers some natural protection, residents are advised to prepare. Every home should have an Emergency Preparedness Kit that includes:
- Several days’ worth of bottled water (one gallon per person, per day)
- Non-perishable food (peanut butter, canned goods, protein bars) with a can opener
- Flashlight, extra batteries, candles, and matches/lighter
- First-aid kit with additional personal medications
- Charged cell phones with backup chargers, and optionally, charged tablets or laptops with downloaded entertainment
- Moist towelettes, garbage bags, and feminine hygiene products
