Meteorologists are warning that the possible arrival of the El Niño climate phenomenon could bring higher temperatures to Puerto Vallarta in the coming months, with heat levels potentially reaching up to 38 degrees Celsius (100°F) in shaded areas beginning in July.
Meteorologist Víctor Manuel Cornejo López reported that while current weather patterns remain neutral, warming sea surface temperatures could intensify in the months ahead. This shift may lead to record-breaking temperatures across several regions of Mexico.
According to Cornejo López, the most noticeable increase is expected during the period known as the “dog days,” which typically begins in July and is marked by intense heat along coastal areas. He noted that temperatures between 37 and 38 degrees Celsius could occur on occasion, even in shaded conditions.
The meteorologist also explained that inland cities such as Guadalajara are expected to experience higher maximum temperatures earlier in the season, particularly in May. However, coastal areas like Puerto Vallarta could see sustained heat levels later in the summer if El Niño strengthens. Current projections suggest the phenomenon could develop into a strong event, increasing the likelihood of extreme heat.
In response to these forecasts, the municipal government led by Mayor Luis Munguía, through the Directorate of Health Promotion, has issued preventative recommendations to help residents stay safe during periods of intense heat.
Health officials recommend avoiding prolonged sun exposure, wearing sunscreen, increasing fluid intake, and using protective items such as hats, caps, or umbrellas. Residents are also encouraged to remain in cool, well-ventilated areas whenever possible.
Dr. Miguel Ángel Suárez Ornelas, Director of Health Promotion, emphasized the importance of reinforcing protective measures, especially for vulnerable groups. These include older adults, young children under five, people living with chronic illnesses, outdoor workers, and pets.
For anyone experiencing early symptoms of heat-related distress – such as dizziness, nausea, or persistent headaches – medical support is readily available. The Doctor Tucán Clinics in Ixtapa and El Pitillal, alongside a rotating Mobile Medical Unit, are providing accessible care throughout the week to ensure the community remains resilient against the upcoming heat wave.
Officials encourage residents to stay informed and prepared as seasonal heat conditions develop in the months ahead. https://banderasnews.com/
