Airport Expansion, New Highway Offer Easy Access to Riviera Nayarit
Travelers to Mexico’s Riviera Nayarit will soon enjoy improved accessibility thanks to a $250 million expansion of the Tepic Airport and a new highway connecting it to the coast.
Currently, most international visitors to the Riviera Nayarit fly into Puerto Vallarta or Guadalajara, but the Tepic Airport’s new international air terminal will offer direct flights, particularly to the northern, less-visited portion of the state of Nayarit. This will make destinations like San Blas and Costa Canuva more accessible, especially for international tourists who make up 60% of the region’s visitors.
The modernized terminal will handle 3 million passengers annually and boast new jet bridges, shops, restaurants, a control tower, a car rental center, and an airport hotel. An hour-and-15-minute highway is also under construction, significantly reducing the travel time from Tepic to Punta Mita.
The new highway that will go directly to some of the state’s most popular tourist destinations – including San Blas, Guayabitos, Sayulita, San Pancho, and Punta Mita – is expected to be completed by October.
“This highway will cover the entire beautiful Mexican Pacific coast, where the fastest growing tourist attractions in the country are located,” Miguel Ángel Navarro Quintero, the Governor of Nayarit, said.
This project aims to attract 4 million visitors a year and boost tourism to the region, which already boasts over 14,000 hotel rooms, mostly in the luxury segment.
