Travelers passing through the Puerto Vallarta International Airport will soon notice ongoing improvements as the facility begins the first phase of a major air conditioning modernization project from April 29 through May 26.
Airport administrators announced that the work will introduce new cooling technology designed to be more energy-efficient and environmentally responsible. While the upgrades are underway, some sections of the terminal may temporarily experience reduced air conditioning service. To maintain comfort, additional ventilation systems will be put in place as needed throughout the affected areas.
Officials emphasized that the project is part of a broader effort to enhance passenger comfort and modernize the airport’s facilities. They also thanked travelers in advance for their patience while improvements are completed.
This latest upgrade follows several recent enhancements across the airport. Public restrooms have already been refurbished to provide improved functionality and cleanliness. In addition, major work has been completed on taxiways and runway surfaces, strengthening them to accommodate larger aircraft with greater seating capacity. These improvements are expected to help the airport handle growing passenger demand in the years ahead.
All of these efforts are included in the 2025–2029 Master Development Plan led by Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP), the company responsible for managing the airport network. The plan outlines an investment of approximately 3.662 billion pesos dedicated to upgrading and improving the existing infrastructure, with total investment over the five-year period reaching nearly $9 billion pesos.
A central feature of the long-term plan is the construction of Terminal 2, along with new road access points and expanded aircraft platforms. The future terminal is being designed with sustainability at its core, with the goal of becoming the first Zero Energy airport terminal in Latin America. Key environmental strategies include installing rooftop solar panels capable of reducing energy use by an estimated 40 percent. Water conservation systems will also play a major role, allowing treated gray, black, and blue water to be reused and reducing total water consumption by approximately 35 percent.
According to GAP, the combination of advanced technology and environmentally responsible design is expected to set a new standard for airport development in Mexico.
