Puerto Vallarta’s cemeteries will soon become open-air art galleries, thanks to a new initiative from the Vallarta Institute of Culture. The “Muralists in the Framework of the Day of the Dead” call invites artists to create large-scale murals inspired by the famous Mexican tradition. The goal is to transform the walls of the city’s three municipal cemeteries into public artworks that celebrate local culture and identity.
Artists and groups are encouraged to submit proposals that focus on key historical figures, events, or traditions of Puerto Vallarta. These themes should be reinterpreted using the rich symbolism of el Día de Muertos. To ensure a cohesive look, the institute has suggested three distinct color palettes for the artists to choose from: Marigold, Night Magic, and Sunset in Vallarta.
The opportunity for artists is now open, with the deadline for submissions on September 30. A special committee will then review the proposals and select the chosen artists between October 1 and 15. All murals must be finished by October 28, just in time for their official inauguration, which will include guided tours on November 1 and 2, as part of the city’s traditional Day of the Dead celebrations.
