Puerto Vallarta is preparing for a major improvement to its public transportation system as 67 brand-new buses are expected to join the UnibusPV fleet within weeks. These additions mark the first step in a broader plan to modernize local transit and replace outdated vehicles.
After months of delays at the Manzanillo customs office due to financial and credit issues involving the manufacturer Fotón, Jalisco’s Secretary of Transportation, Diego Monraz Villaseñor, confirmed that the complications have been resolved. With the loan for the concessionaire approved, the buses are ready for release.
“The loan has already been authorized, and the buses are in customs. As soon as they are released, they can begin operating almost immediately…” Monraz explained in an interview with local media.
Once they arrive in Puerto Vallarta, the buses will undergo branding and necessary upgrades before being fully integrated into the city’s transportation network. According to Monraz, this process will be swift, and the units are expected to be on the streets and serving passengers within four weeks.
The new buses are part of the municipality’s public transportation renewal plan, which includes replacing obsolete units and improving service frequencies and routes. In a second phase, set to begin in October, 38 articulated electric buses will be introduced along Francisco Medina Ascencio Avenue. These modern vehicles will serve a route stretching from the Centro Universitario de la Costa (CUCosta) to the downtown area of Puerto Vallarta.
Backed by an investment of over 867 million pesos, this initiative mirrors successful upgrades in Guadalajara and is designed to provide safer, cleaner, and more efficient transit options.
