Chivas is set to return to its historic home at Estadio Jalisco as preparations begin to renovate Estadio Akron for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The temporary move marks a nostalgic moment for the club, which played at Estadio Jalisco from 1960 to 2010, winning many of its most essential championships there.
Estadio Akron, opened in 2010, will undergo a $12.4 million renovation. This investment will help the stadium meet FIFA’s high standards for the World Cup, scheduled to host four matches. Among the most important upgrades will be the installation of hybrid grass of FIFAPro quality, making Akron the first stadium in Mexico with this technology. A new world-class drainage system will also be installed, a project expected to take several months to complete.
While an exact date for Chivas’ return to Estadio Jalisco has not been confirmed, the move could be as early as the Clausura 2025 tournament or in the next season.
Chivas owner Amaury Vergara shared his vision for the future of Akron Stadium. Beyond meeting FIFA’s requirements, the upgrades aim to transform the fan experience.
