On April 9, Puerto Vallarta celebrated Playa de Oro’s achievement of earning the prestigious Beach Quality Certification and White Flag from Mexico’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat). This recognition highlights the city’s dedication to sustainability, safety, and environmental protection.
The certification was presented by Luis Eduardo Alarcón Núñez, Director of Operations of the Mexican Institute for Standardization and Certification, during a special event at Playa de Oro, next to the Krystal Vallarta hotel. The award confirms that the 590-meter stretch of beach meets strict national standards for water quality, cleanliness, biodiversity, infrastructure, safety, and waste management.
Mr. Alarcón Núñez congratulated Puerto Vallarta for its success in regaining this esteemed certification, which signifies clean, accessible, and secure beaches. He further emphasized the importance of their dedication to sustainability, stating that this focus “will significantly boost the destination’s progress and ensure consistent high-season tourism. Congratulations on this remarkable achievement; your efforts are an inspiring example.”
He also thoughtfully pointed out that sustainability is not merely an end goal but “a continuous journey that requires collective effort and a firm belief that the future well-being of our beaches depends on the actions we implement today.”
Mayor Luis Munguía expressed pride in the accomplishment, noting that Playa de Oro’s certification is part of a larger goal to earn similar recognition for 15 beaches across Puerto Vallarta. Councilman Cristian Omar Bravo Carbajal added that community involvement has played a key role, with over 2,300 volunteers participating in 20 beach cleanups, collecting more than 100 tons of trash.
The event also featured words from Manuel del Callejo Palacios, manager of Krystal Vallarta, who emphasized the importance of working together to preserve these valuable natural spaces. “This achievement belongs to all of us — hotel staff, local authorities, vendors, and visitors,” he said. “Puerto Vallarta thrives because people choose to come here. Keeping our beaches beautiful is something we should all take pride in.”
