Malecon Sculpture Walking Tours
We are delighted to announce the Malecon Sculpture Walking Tours on its 13th season is underway and will continue every Tuesday through the middle of April. This FREE tour is created by Gary Thompson the owner of Galeria Pacifico which is located at Aldama #174, between Juarez and Morelos Streets.
The tour begins every Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. in front of the “Millennium” sculpture next to the Hotel Rosita at the north end of the Malecon in downtown Puerto Vallarta. Sculptor Sr. Fernando Banos (known also as Mathis Lidice) will explain the history, the making and details on this towering figure.
Gary leads the tour along the Malecon in Puerto Vallarta and he will explain the artist and the history behind about fifteen sculptures. Minute details that might be otherwise missed will be pointed out by Gary giving you a deeper understanding of the significance of each sculpture. Kevin Simpson, of Colectika and Peyote People art galleries, will explain the numerous Huichol symbols that are etched into the Malecón’s pavement.
The Sunset Tours are hosted every Thursday at 6:00 p.m. at the Galeria Pacifico. The tour runs for one and one-half hours from the south along the Malecon to the Demetro Galeria across from Lazaro Cardenas Park. Sculpture Jim Demetro will talk about his public sculptures: Dancers of Vallarta, Woman Washing Clothes, and Andale Bernardo. Jim is always happy to explain the complex wax process he still uses to create his sculptures in bronze, while his wife Eva offers wine and snacks.
Please Note: The Sunset Sculpture Tour will be suspended on Thursday, November 22, in celebration of American Thanksgiving, but will resume the following Thursday and continue on a weekly basis through mid-April, 2019.
Gary’s numerous personal friendships with many of Puerto Vallarta’s artists along with his personal experiences and interactions with the sculptors make the walk both entertaining and educational. Both sculpture tours support Biblioteca Los Mangos, Puerto Vallarta’s Public Library, and Cultural Center.
Los Mangos representatives will be on hand at the end of both tours to explain their many worthwhile projects and services, and to gratefully accept any donations offered to help support these activities.
Los Mangos is a non-profit organization and receives next to no support from the local government. I think it’s important for all of us to give back to our community. Gary is very mindful of this fact, given that he has enjoyed more than half my life in this wonderful city called Puerto Vallarta.
